Students aged 11 to 15 interested in becoming trained and certified babysitters are encouraged to call the YWCA and add their name to a class list. Once enough people are interested a class will be scheduled. Classes traditionally meet on a Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and provide those in attendance with first aid, home safety guidelines and emergency training. Those who complete the class receive a variety of take home materials and written proof of their training. The class cost is $35 per person, but financial aid is available. Call the YWCA at 326-2011 to register your interest.
Guests at the recent Father Daughter Dance held at the YWCA Westfield were given introductory dance lessons from Emma Bishop, owner of Center Stage Dance Studio, while DJ Shane Monroe from Digital Extravaganza, KoolTunes.com, featured dance tunes during the rest of the evening. Board members provided refreshments and prizes for the young ladies and board member Priscilla Malarkey took a keepsake photo of each couple. Decorations were courtesy of the Westfield Academy and Central School Prom Committee. A wide selection of candid photos taken by board member Ida Klahn are available on the YWCA’s Facebook page. Proceeds from the dance will be used in the YWCA youth services programs.
Adult exercise classes will continue to meet over the summer. The classes meet each Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. A variety of exercises are offered and each participant is encouraged to work at their own pace. A YWCA membership is required, but there is no additional charge. Walk-ins are welcome.
YWCA products remain on sale at the agency. There are mugs, pens, tote bags and backpacks available, all with the YWCA logo and mission statement printed against the persimmon background.
Girls summer program
Enrollment for the YWCA girls summer program is continuing. The program is open to girls in the Westfield area who are entering grades four through eight. The program begins each day at the YWCA and runs Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., for the weeks of July 9 through Aug. 16. The cost of the program is a $50 registration fee and any costs related to field trips or extra activities. Scholarships are available upon request. More details regarding the summer programs at the YWCA are available by calling the YWCA Child Services office at 326-4012
The YWCA fitness center will be offering dollar visits beginning Thursday, June 14 and continuing through the end of the month. YWCA members will be able to add visits to their account for $1 each.
"This is a good way to plan ahead and make sure you have visits on your account," YWCA executive director Katie Smith said. "Last summer was a hot one and many people took advantage of our facility to continue their workout routine. We accept cash and checks only, office hours are Monday through Friday and Tuesday evenings. Call the Y at 326-2011 for more details."
Arts and crafts
Planning and volunteer scheduling continues for the 2012 Arts and Crafts Festival. There are still spaces available for vendors and some time slots remain for volunteers.
"There is a variety of opportunities for community members to spend time helping the YWCA," ED of the YWCA Katie Smith said. "We're happy to talk with everyone and find them a time and job that fits their skills. Please call the YWCA at 326-2011 and sign up soon."
