WESTFIELD - Lucas Seybold of Fredonia is the 2012 Chautauqua County chess champion.

He won three games and lost only one during the month-long tournament sponsored by the Westfield Chess Club with final matches played Wednesday, June 13 at CJ's restaurant on East Main Street in Westfield.

Ten players from Chautauqua County and Erie County, Pa., competed. While Seybold is the champion because he had the best record among Chautauqua County players, the best overall record was compiled by Richard Mitchell representing the Erie, Pa., Chess Club, winning three games and tying another.

Ratings of the 10 players ranged from a high of 2044 to a low of 959 indicating a very wide range of ability and experience. Seybold was not nearly a favorite at the start. His 1570 rating placed him at sixth best.

Ray Willis from the Erie club won two and lost two, but was good enough to be named best player with a rating under 1600, and Westfield's Ryan Tofil, also with a two and two record, was winner of best player rated less than 1400.

Prizes included a trophy, plaques and cash. The Westfield Chess Club meets at CJ's on Wednesday evenings starting at 5 p.m. There are no dues and all are welcome including those seeking to learn chess as well as those looking for a local game.

Local club members also compete in tournaments held in Western New York and Western Pennsylvania
