CHAUTAUQUA - John Zappella, 49, of Pearl Street in Westfield was charged with speed in zone, possession of marijuana and open container in a motor vehicle on Wednesday, June 6.
According to the sheriff's office, Zappella was stopped on Route 394 in the Village of Westfield for allegedly speeding around 11:30 p.m. Following a vehicle stop, he was allegedly found to have an open container of alcohol and a small amount of marijuana in his vehicle. He was issued appearance tickets and will appear in Chautauqua Town Court on a later date.
HARMONY - Brian K. Maloy, 49, of Panama was charged with driving while intoxicated, fail to keep right and move from lane unsafely on Friday, June 8.
According to the sheriff's office, patrol received a report of a motorcycle crash with injury on Hoag Road in the Town of Harmony around 10:30 p.m. Maloy was allegedly operating his motorcycle southbound on Hoag Road when he lost control and crashed. He was allegedly ejected off his bike and received apparently minor injuries. Maloy was treated at the scene and transported to WCA Hospital by the Panama Fire Department. Following an investigation, deputies charged Maloy, who will appear in Harmony Town Court on a later date. The Bear Lake Fire Department and Lakewood-Busti Police Department assisted at the scene.
MAYVILLE - Travis A. Vankevren, 19, of Panama Sted Road in Mayville was charged with possession of marijuana on Saturday, June 9.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies stopped Vankevren for allegedly loud exhaust around 12:15 a.m. After speaking to Vankevren, a strong odor of marijuana was allegedly observed coming from within his vehicle. Following a check of the vehicle, Vankevren and a 16-year-old passenger were allegedly found to be in possession of marijuana hash. Both subjects were issued appearance tickets and will appear in Chautauqua Town Court on a later date.
WESTFIELD - The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of an Orchard Park man in Westfield at 6:03 a.m., Sunday, June 10.
According to the sheriff's office, the initial investigation showed Paul Bischoff, 48, fell over a cliff at the Brookside Beach Campground on Route 5 in Westfield. He fell 40 feet down the cliff before landing on a beach area of Lake Erie. An autopsy will be done at the Erie County Medical Center.
Westfield volunteer firefighters and County Coroner John Mackowiak also responded to the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
CHAUTAUQUA - Adam G. Fludine, 20, of Beachwood, Ohio was injured in a tubing accident on Chautauqua Lake on Sunday, June 10.
According to the sheriff's office, Fludine was tubing with friends off of a vessel operated by Francis O'Shaughnessy, 20, of University Heights, Ohio. Fludine was thrown off the tube and sustained a neck injury around 1 p.m. Fludine was taken to shore by his friends and transported to Westfield Memorial Hospital by Maple Springs Fire Department.
MAYVILLE - Lance I. Clark, 27, of Washington Street in Jamestown, John W. Harper, 23, of South Main Street in Jamestown, Luis Montanez, 34, of Wyandotte Street in Buffalo and David Deynes, 30, of Maryland Street in Buffalo were each charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief on Monday, June 11.
According to the sheriff's office, during a routine search of Podular Housing Unit A of the Chautauqua County Jail around 9 p.m., it is alleged the above inmates were discovered to be in possession of a large amount of destroyed Westlaw Legal Reference materials. These legal materials were the property of the jail. The above subjects were charged and will appear in Chautauqua Town Court on a later date.
