Marriage discussion drowned in emotions
Letter to the Editor of the Westfield Republican
Factual discussion of same sex marriage has been drowned in a sea of emotional fury. Take a moment to remember that there are two separate kinds of legal marriages, civil under the authority of state law and religious under the authority of church law. Constitutionally, churches are legally empowered to independently accept or deny same sex marriages, but have not authority to promote their law into civil law. The only question is whether same sex partners are to be given the same civil rights under state law as different sex partners? Under only state authority, same sex marriage grants civil rights of marriage to gay partners. On the other hand, church weddings are conducted simultaneously under the authorities of state and church to give couples the rights of both the church and the secular civil rights of state law.
