JAMESTOWN - Maple Grove Central School won the 51st High School Bowl tournament, defeating Chautauqua Lake Central School 76-62 in the championship match.
The final contest was played recently at Jamestown Community College and broadcast over Media One radio stations WJTN-AM and WWSE-FM.
Maple Grove, which completed the season with six wins and no losses, will attend the National Academic Championship in Washington, D.C. in June. Members of the Maple Grove team included captain Henry Kestner, Jake Prindle-Cassidy, Elliott Clark, Jessica Santilli, Nick Bowers, Abby Sirwatka and Jesse Pardue. The team is coached by Jason VandeVelde.
Playing for Chautauqua Lake were captain David Hindman, Greg Hoitink, Rebecca Silliman and Jessie Meredith. The coaches for Chautauqua Lake are Mary Jantzi and Kim Sweet.
Kestner and Hindman were named Players of the Match.
The JCC Alumni Association will award a $1000 scholarship for two years to a Maple Grove senior planning to attend JCC. The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation will present a $500 scholarship to Chautauqua Lake as the second place school. Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Honor Society of Women Educators, will provide $250 in travel expense money to the Maple Grove team.
High School Bowl, the longest running academic competition of its type in the United States, is sponsored by the JCC Alumni Association, Honest John's Pizza and Wings, SKF Aeroengine North America, The Weinberg Financial Group, Wegmans, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation and Delta Kappa Gamma, with additional support from the State University of New York College at Fredonia.
