Winter has finally arrived again in Sherman and as of Jan. 13 we have had 47 inches of the "white stuff." Weathermen had predicted last night that we would get about a foot of it, but we didn't get that much. I can still see some grass and or weeds in some places. The stormy forecast still has time to arrive in full force, so we'll have to wait and see what happens tonight.
Folk often say that it seems that January is the longest month of the year. It's true that the December holidays with all its activities are over and the New Year celebration is past. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean that one has to get the doldrums because it's cold and snowy and there's no more holidays until Valentines Day and that's not always what its cracked up to be.
Did you know that any day, winter, spring, summer or fall, can be a special day, for it's only what you make it?
For instance, one could spontaneously invite some neighbors, friends or family to your house for coffee. Don't fuss or worry about what your house looks like. Perhaps you can come up with a special theme and turn the gathering into a surprise party. It doesn't matter whether its simple or elaborate, just make it a fun time with some games, treats or other enjoyable activities.
If one doesn't want to invite folk in, suggest meeting at a coffee shop or restaurant, or purchase some "thinking of you cards." If the cost is too much, check out dollar stores where they are only a dollar per card or less. One can get free greeting cards on the Internet and can sent them by e-mail if the recipient has a computer. Cards can also be sent by mail, which costs only the price of a stamp.
If you would like some ideas for special January days that could be used as the theme for an impromptu get together:
Jan. 23 is Chinese New Years - it's the year 4710
Jan. 25 is Opposite Day
Jan. 26 is Australia Day
National Oatmeal Day and Tea Day are "month or January" celebrations that would be appropriate for a special day celebration any time this month. Just think about all the goodies that can be made or purchased that include oatmeal as one of its ingredients, and tea can be used as a basis for a delicious punch.
Other themes that I might use for making a special winter day: Bad Hair Day; Teen Day; Old Lady Day; First Date Day; Ones Wedding Day; things one has learned from their mother-in-law over the years. The host could dress appropriately for the "special" day.
If you are sick and tired of winter, I suggest you try encouraging others by creating a special winter day for them. It may cheer you up as well as others, and chase away all your winter "blues" too.
Lastly, as I've said before, "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalms 118:24).
