Benjamin Howard Sr., 88, formerly of Ripley, N.Y., died Monday (Nov. 21, 2011) in North East, Pa.
He was born June 5, 1923 to the late Marguerite and Andrew “Drew” Howard.
Surviving is his wife of 29 years, Dorothy (Day) Howard, along with sons Benjamin Howard Jr., of Wattsburg, Pa., Gary (Carol) Howard of Mayville, N.Y., daughters Jean (Charlie) Firewick of Wattsburg, Pa., Rose Swoger of Ripley, N.Y., Janet (Bob) Gibbs of Ripley, N.Y., and son Donald Howard of Frackville, Pa., and daughter, Tina (Mike) Hawkins of Ripley, N.Y. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rita Mae Ellsworth; twin grandsons; and a great-great-grandson, Cameron Lee Massey.
He retired from General Electric in Erie, Pa., where he worked as a drill press operator. Prior to that, he owned and operated a dairy farm in Findley Lake.
Friends were received from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27 followed by a formal service at Mathews Funeral Home in Ripley, N.Y.
