Dr. Paul E. DeMarco

Paul Edward “Doc” DeMarco of Clinton Street, Fredonia, formerly of Silver Creek, N.Y., died Sunday, Nov. 20 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Paul was born on Jan. 29, 1918 in Farnham, N.Y., to Lewis and Josephine DeMarco. He graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1935 and from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1939 with his Bachelor of Science degree. He then enrolled at the St. Louis University Center for Advanced Dental Education in St. Louis, Mo., graduating in 1942. Upon his graduation, he joined the staff there, teaching at the dental school for almost three years. He married the former Anne Zeffiro of Farnham, N.Y., in 1943 and together they raised four children, enjoying 33 years of marriage until her death in 1976.

In 1945, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Great Lakes, Ill. He achieved the rank of Lt. Commander and was put on reserve status and returned to Silver Creek in 1947 to start his private dental practice. In 1952, during the Korean War, he was called to active duty, off-loaned by the U.S. Navy to the U.S. Army, promoted to Commander and was in charge of the dental clinic in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1954 Paul returned home with his family and was on inactive duty with the U.S. Naval Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1967. He resumed his dental practice in Silver Creek, retiring in 1980.

Paul’s memberships included the Chautauqua County Dental Society (president 1960), the 8th District Dental Society, Lake Shore and Brooks Memorial Hospital medical staff, Silver Creek Central School Board of Education and the longest living member of the original Planning Board of Lake Shore Hospital. He enjoyed memberships in the VFW, American Legion Post 59, Dunkirk and Silver Creek Loyal Order of the Moose and a member of Tri Country Club for 54 years. His love of golf, gardening and card playing won him many prizes. He also enjoyed bowling and traveling.

Paul is survived by his second wife, the former Florence LaTona, whom he married in 1979 and his three sons, Louis (Garland) of Fredonia, N.Y., Paul V. (Linda) of Forestville, N.Y., and Michael of Sorrento, Fla. He is further survived by three sisters, Lucille Peterson of Cheektowaga,

N.Y., Lena Ralabate, also of Cheektowaga, N.Y., and Rose Berns of Farnham, N.Y.; a brother, John of Arcade, N.Y.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul was predeceased by his first wife, Anne, his daughter, Paula, two sisters, Josephine Fourness and Louise Chiavetta, and one brother, James DeMarco.

Friends called at Fantauzzi’s Funeral Home, 82 E. Main Street, Fredonia, N.Y., on Friday, Nov. 25 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 a.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 165 Central Ave., Silver Creek, N.Y. Interment to follow in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
