LAKEWOOD — Think about celebrating the New Year in a new way — with a 5K.
The Chautauqua Striders Winter 5K Series is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Dec. 31. The series is a handicap run race series. At each race, the slowest runners start first followed, at various intervals, by faster runners with the fastest runners starting last. If the handicappers get it right, everyone should finish each race at almost the same time.
There are five races in the series. The races will take place in Lakewood on the following Saturdays: Dec. 31; Jan. 14, 2012; Jan. 28, 2012; Feb. 11, 2012; and Feb. 25, 2012. Start times will be between 10 and 10:30 a.m.
All race participants will receive a 2012 family membership to the Chautauqua Striders Running and Walking Club and a discount card good for 25 percent off running and walking footwear and apparel at the Jamestown Cycle Shop during 2012. The top finishers in each race will receive a Wing City Grille gift card. The top point accumulators after the final race will each receive a Jamestown Cycle Shop gift card.
The series entry fee is $50 resulting in an average cost of only $10 per race. Any participant who is an immediate family member of another participant who has paid the $50 entry fee can participate in the series for only $10.
Series sponsors include Wing City Grille, the Jamestown Cycle Shop and Michael Engdahl, Attorney at Law. Proceeds from the series benefit Chautauqua Striders’ youth track and field programs.
Interested runners can find a series registration form on Striders’ web site, . Runners must register for the series by Friday, Dec. 16 to allow enough time for initial handicaps to be calculated. Questions regarding the series should be directed to Mike Engdahl at 485-6913 or email@example.com.
