PANAMA — Andrea Marsh, a senior cornerback at Panama Central School, is one of just 50 nationwide semifinalists for this year’s High School Football Rudy Awards.

According to its website, the Rudy Awards “celebrate inspirational young athletes who embody the values of character, courage, contribution and commitment through the sport of football.”

The winner, as chosen by a fan vote and a selection committee that includes such former NFL stars like Drew Bledsoe, Troy Aikman and Shaun Alexander, will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship from the Trusted Sports Foundation.

This season Marsh, who was also honored in the Oct. 3 issue of Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd,” racked up 55 tackles and a team-leading four interceptions for the Panthers (5-3).

“She leads by example and was never afraid of what people thought or said,” Panama coach Chris Payne wrote in his nomination letter. “Other coaches in the fall tried to coerce her into their sport, saying that there was going to come a time when she could not play football anymore. She never wavered and took that on as a challenge.”

The announcement of the top-12 finalists will be in PARADE Magazine on Dec. 11. The winner of the award will then be announced, along with a feature story, in the Jan. 15, 2012 issue of PARADE.
