SHERMAN — Holly Eliason, Rebecca King, and Ryan Carpenter qualified for the New York State cross country meet to be held at Verona, N.Y.
Team wise, the varsity boys finished third with Carpenter in 11th place, Jordan Boland in 12th, Trevor Gleason in 16th, Nathan Ottaway in 21st, Stephen Walczak in 28th and Bryan Tenpas 30th.
Sherman’s girls team finished in second place with Eliason finishing in third place, Rebecca King in ninth, Katie Pacy in 13th, Nicolle Damcott in 14th, Rebekah Anderson in 30th and Jacqueline Smith in 32nd.
Thursday night prior to the race, a send off and award dinner was held in the Fellowship Hall at the Sherman First Baptist Church. The dinner was prepared by the parents of the runners. The area was decorated with blue and gold streamers and table cloths along with quotes from famous athletes.
Coach Arden Downey presented the following awards to team members:
Boys’ team awards — Tenpas, Stephen Walez and Ottaway
Most improved runner — Gleason
Most valuable — Boland and Carpenter
Girls’ team awards — Anderson and Smith
Most improved runners — Pacy, Katie White and King
Senior award — Damcott
Most valuable — Eliason
Coach Downey thanked all the runners for a good season and all the parents and grandparents for their support and preparing a great send off dinner. A special thank you went to the Baptist Church for use of their dinning facility.
Eliason leads Sherman runners at state meet
VERONA, N.Y. — Holly Eliason finished sixth at the New York State cross country meet last Saturday to lead Sherman runners. Rebecca King came in 21st in her first time at the state meet and Ryan Carpenter finished 58th. All three Sherman runners received first place awards as they were part of the winning Section 6 team in their individual races.
Eliason, King and Carpenter have been selected to compete in the Western New York All Star race next Sunday at Elma Meadows.
