PORTLAND — The mood was festive at the fourth annual Wine and Cheese tasting fundraiser for the Westfield Memorial Hospital Foundation this past weekend.

Close to 100 people attended the event, which offered a wide variety of appetizers, cheeses and desserts prepared by board members of both the hospital and the foundation. The wine was provided by the evening’s host, the newly opened 21 Brix Winery located on Route 20 in Portland.

“What a great offering of food,” President and CEO of Saint Vincent Health System Dr. Scott Whalen. “It can’t be good for you because it tastes way too good.”

While the proceeds of the fundraiser went towards the foundation’s 2011 campaign, Whalen presented a $50,000 check representing his organization’s 2010 challenge grant which will go towards the foundation’s 2010 campaign. Saint Vincent is Westfield Hospital’s affiliate hospital and is located in Erie, Pa.

WMHF President Rose Van Volkenburg thanked Dr. Whalen for his generous gift.

“We thank you for your commitment once again this year,” Van Volkenburg said.

Whalen thanked her for all of the foundation’s commitment as well for the three T’s, “time, talent and treasure” that is donated to the hospital.

“It’s really through community support that you actually have a fine facility and great access,” Whalen said. “You’re community has confidence in you; it makes it easy to do a challenge grant.”

Director of Development for the WMHF Patty DiPalma thanked the guests in attendance and said she was pleased with turnout and was grateful to entire community, especially the foundation’s donors. Most recently the foundation was asked to fund the new ear, nose and throat clinic at the hospital.

“It’s a great addition,” DiPalma said. “If you haven’t seen it yet, we welcome you to stop in.”

People were excited not only to see the new winery, DiPalma said, but to show their commitment to the hospital, especially now that it is obvious it is here to stay. The money raised by the Wine and Cheese tasting will go to provide funding for medical equipment which allows hospital to provide quality health care to the community.
