SHERMAN — This years’ Sherman girls’, boys’ and modified cross country teams have a nice blend of experience and youth.
Sherman will have six league meets and attend the McQueen, St. Bonaventure and Cuba Rushford Invitationals.
The girls’ team is led by sophomore Holly Eliason, last years’ Runner of the Year in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus league and a state meet qualifier. Other varsity girl runners are senior Nicole Damcott, sophomores Rebekah Anderson and Jacqueline Smith, freshman Katie White an?d eighth-grader Rebecca King. Katie Pacie, a seventh grader, may see some varsity action later in the year.
The boys’ team is led by Jordan Boland, Ryan Carpenter, Trevor Gleason and Bryan Tenpas, all sophomores and returning runners. Carpenter was a state meet qualifier last year. Other varsity runners are freshmen Nathan Ottawa, Stephen Walzak and Bill Scarrem.
The boys’ modified team members are Kyle Carpenter, Chris Robson, Samuel Starceski, Jacob Martin and Justin Svetz. The girls’ modified team members are Abbey Cole, Alexi Decronie, Erin Fisher, Journee Hannold, Jordan Phelps and Katie Pacie.
This year, Sean McKane assists Coach Arden Downey. This year it is Downey’s 42nd year of coaching cross country in Sherman. He is second among active coaches in the state of New York with 538 wins and also first all time in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Country.
This year, Sherman has two home meets at the Woodcrest Golf Course on Tuesday, Sept. 20 against Falconer, Silver Creek and Gowanda and Tuesday, Oct. 18 against Westfield-Ripley and Frewsburg.
