Even as Hurricane Irene was coming to the East Coast, playing conditions stayed excellent for the golfers in the Westfield Retirees Travel Golf League, held at South Hills in Busti on Monday, Aug. 29.
Glen Eck’s low net 70 led the team to first place along with Jim Quinn, net 72, John Barone, net 73 and Roger Kolpien. Only the best three of four scores were used. They won by just one stroke over the team of Leroy Vahl, tied low net 70, Gary Farley, net 73, and John Barone, net 73, for a total 216 score. Gary Nash’s low net 76 was not used.
In third place was the team of Al Muck, Ray Atkinson and Jeff Wagner, each of whom shot identical 74 nets. Jim Dascoli’s 75 net was not used.
Welcome aboard for the first time this year were Muck, Dascoli and Ray McKinnon.
Par 4’s earned skins for Kolpien on No. 3 and Quinn on No. 5. It took birdies by Jeff Graebell on No. 14 and Muck on No. 16 to win their skins. All par 3 holes had birdie 2’s to win skins for Bob Tefft on No. 9, Phil Young on No. 4 and Mel Allen on No. 13. A birdie 4 on hole No. 8 by Tefft and an even par 5 on hole No. 12 by Jordan were skins. Notice that 1/3 of skins were earned by pars, contrary to popular belief. The only consideration are untied, low scores on each hole.
Closest to the pin winners were not provided by the group.
The next event will be at Gospel Hill on Monday Sept. 12. Golfers should meet at the Moose Club by 8:30 a.m. with first tee-time at 9:45 a.m.
