The importance of crosswalks

August 30, 2011

Emergency medical staff attend to a 17-year-old Westfield youth laying in the grass Tuesday, August 23 after he was struck by a vehicle around 3:45 p.m. while attempting to cross Main Street in Westfield. The youth did not use one of the many available crosswalks along Route 20 in his attempt to cross the road near McDonald’s, and, according to police, the elderly Westfield woman who hit him did not see him. The youth sustained trauma from the collision and was transported to Westfield Memorial Hospital before being flown to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa. Responding Sergeant Brent Burgess of the Westfield Police Department stressed the importance of using the crosswalks available to pedestrians. “That’s what they’re there for,” he said.
