Progress on identifying people in one photo

Buzzings from BeeLines

August 2, 2011
By Marybelle Beigh, Current Westfield Historian
This week, the first of the mystery photos, which is the one that also received the most input, is being reprinted.

The information that was provided initially about this photo stated that it was “of a male jazz band… with a female vocalist, from approximately 1945-1950.” This photo was provided by Jay Stratton, and had only one person positively identified, Stratton’s father, David Stratton, front row left, playing a sax.

As the photo was shown to various current and former Westfield residents and other folks who were home for alumni weekend, the second person to be positively identified was Roger Waite, front row and third from left, playing what appears to be a baritone sax. Several folks suggested that the trumpet player, front row and fourth from left, looked like “Mattie” Mathews, who later directed the Deutchmeisters for many years.

After the photo was published in Buzzings from BeeLines, I asked Vinnie Calarco if he could identify any of the band members. He and his wife, Charlotte, provided the following identifications:

Front row, left to right: Dave Stratton on sax; Sam Baideme on sax; Roger Waite on bari-sax); Alva “Mattie” Mathews on trumpet; and Dick Brooker on piano.

Back row, left to right: Corbin from Dunkirk on drums; and Jim McAllister on stand-up bass.

Additional memories expressed included:

“This band played often at the Moose house on North Portage.”

“I remember the band playing at various places around town, including the Murray Hill Hotel.”

“One female vocalist who sang with the band was Gretchen Baldwin, but that is not her in the photo.”

The “H-B” on the band stands has not yet been identified although it was considered “familiar” and Vinnie Calarco said he thought the “B” might just stand for band.

If any readers have confirmations, disagreements, or further identifications other name of drummer, name of vocalist, or names for “H-B” please contact Marybelle Beigh. Thanks for the help.
