There are times when we “older” residents tend to criticize and question the actions of the teens in our communities.
A good lesson for all of us was learned by attending the WACS production of HairSpray this weekend. I have been attending the school musicals over the past few years and have come away with a very good feeling about our young people. Saturday night was no exception. The production, under the leadership of Kent Knappenberger, was exceptional in staging and talent. The number of students in the cast far surpassed those in previous productions and the talent was such that you had a hard time believing that these were teens and not professionals.
The lesson of this particular play, which was staged in the early 1960’s, was one of the need for integration and therefore taught a lesson to the students as well as the audience.
The standing ovation received was markedly deserved and I would encourage those of us reading this letter to make an effort to congratulate the members of the cast and the stage crew along with the teachers and parents that made this all possible.
