This past weekend I was reminded, once again, of the amazing gift we have in the Westfield Academy and Central School’s music department.
The middle school performance of “The Wizard of Oz” on Friday evening was wonderful. Then, on Saturday, we attended the Chautauqua County Winter All-county festival in Silver Creek with 8 WACS 6th-graders who performed in the elementary band. It was a wonderful concert.
But it wasn’t an unusual weekend for parents of music students at WACS.
Since November 13, nearly every other week has had some form of musical experience provided by the student musicians at WACS. The Westwinds presentation of “Pirates of Penzance” and performance at the NYS music teachers conference in Rochester were amazing. Having students chosen from Westfield to perform in the High School and Jr.
High School Area All-State Bands in December were tremendous honors for the students and music department. The Chamber Choir Festival in January was also an incredible experience, not only for WACS but for the other 7 participating schools’ students and families as well. There’s a concert on February 24th with students from both the elementary and middle schools, then another concert the second week of March. And there’s no reason to believe that they will be anything less than fantastic.
But it’s not only the abundance of performances that is remarkable. The other thing that I’ve found to be impressive, as a chaperone now for three different events, is the level of professionalism and courtesy that our students display when they travel. By the time they’re in 7th grade, and continuing through 12th, they have learned to live up to the high expectations of their teachers; not just in their musical skills, but also in public behavior. These students represent their school and community well, wherever they travel.
The dedication of the music staff, the excitement of the students, the support of the school, and the expectations of the community have combined to create an absolutely outstanding experience in music for our kids and students.
I am truly grateful for all the experiences our children are receiving through these programs in Westfield, and thank all the people (past as well as current) who have made these opportunities possible.
