WESTFIELD – Scott Robbins can remember when he worked at Westfield Nursery during high school and college and the business only had a few trucks and a few employees.
Now, with more than 30 employees and around 13 trucks, the business is looking to give back to the community which has supported it for so long.
On June 12 and 13, Westfield Nursery will be holding its Celebration Weekend, as the business, now owned by Robbins and wife, Laurie, celebrates 75 years. Included in the celebration will be special deals, hot dogs, coffee and doughnuts and other promotions.
“A lot of people come to support it,” Mrs. Robbins said. “It’s a fun weekend. It’s busy.”
What started out as a small fruit stand in 1935 has now grown to include a retail garden center, a landscaping business and snow plowing during the winter.
“I had worked here when I was going to college,” said Robbins, who purchased the business in 1991 from Nancy and Charlie Hanks. “I was going to school for engineering, but I always liked this. I finally switched over and got a degree in horticulture. As I came closer to graduation, I asked Charlie and Nancy if they were interested in selling the business.”
The Robbins said they have tried to keep the same feel to the nursery as when the Hanks owned and operated it.
“It left the family with us, but they (the Hank’s) kind of became family,” Mrs. Robbins said. “It feels like it’s still a family business because we tried to keep a lot of the same traditions.”
Robbins said the business specializes in landscape design and installation, including patios, water features and retaining walls.
“As we do those jobs, then that leads into the maintenance aspect of it,” he said. “We do a lot of the design, build and then construct kind of thing.”
Robbins also said he and his wife have tried to make the nursery into a garden-like setting, including a new water feature and benches, and they want customers to feel as if they were in their own backyard.
And, so far, business has gone well.
“It stays fairly steady around here, which is nice,” Robbins said. “It keeps us busy.”
“We’ve been really fortunate,” Mrs. Robbins added. “We get great local support. The people of Westfield support us really well.”
When asked what was the best part of owning their own business the Robbins were both quick with an answer.
“We’re very fortunate and very blessed to do what we do,” Mrs. Robbins said. “People come down here because they want to come here. It’s a lot of hard work, and there are ups and downs, but I think we’ve just had great support.”
