WESTFIELD – To some visitors to Saraf’s Emporium in Westfield, it may seem owners John and Peggy Saraf are avid fishermen during the winter months.
During the winter months – January, February and March – a sign is usually hanging on the door of the business reading, “Gone Fishin’” and telling customers the shop would be closed until the spring.
But things are different this winter, as the Saraf’s have put off their seasonal “fishing” trip and will keep their antique store open for a few days out of the week. Until April 1, when the business will open seven days a week, Saraf’s Emporium will be open on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“A lot of people get a little cooped up over the winter, and it’s a large enough space that it’s worth coming out in the cold for because people can spend a few hours here,” said Jennifer Saraf, the daughter of John and Peggy and an employee of the business. “it’s not just a five minute stop, and you’re thinking why bother going out into the colder weather. It just gives something for somebody to do over the winter months.”
Located at 58 E. Main Street in Westfield, Saraf’s Emporium features a wide variety and large selection of antique items. Housed in the former Ben Franklin’s building in the village, the spacious shop offers customers glassware, furniture, estate jewelry, China, oriental carpets, toys and other items.
“This location has been open 15 years, but they’ve had two other stores in town,” Jennifer Saraf said. “They just keep getting bigger.”
And, as Jennifer Saraf said, there really is something for everybody.
“It’s quite the collection,” she said.
But, like most businesses, the economy has had some impact on the antique shop.
“We’re dealing with the economy, but we’re still doing okay,” Jennifer Saraf said. “Antiques are not a necessity, but a lot of people are investing in them because they hold their value.”
Interacting with customers is the best part about owning a business, Jennifer Saraf said.
“Everyday is different here,” she said. “You never know what’s going to come in the front door. It’s always exciting.”
