Rose (Canale) Paternostro, 87, formerly of Westfield, passed away on Nov. 8, 2009, in Simi Valley, Calif., after an extended illness. Rose was born on Dec. 16, 1921, in Westfield, N.Y., to Henry and Frances (Militello) Canale. She was a 1940 graduate of Westfield Academy and Union School and went on to work at Welch’s in Westfield for many years. On June 28, 1941, Rose married Nick Paternostro of Brocton, N.Y. The couple relocated to Los Angeles in 1952 and began long careers at UCLA. They also welcomed a daughter, Kara, into their lives in the early 1960s. In the 1980s, following their retirement from UCLA, the Paternostros moved to Simi Valley, Calif., to be closer their daughter. After Nick’s passing in 1992, Rose began doing regular volunteer work at the Simi Valley City Hall while enjoying weekend getaways to Palm Springs, Calif. She also traveled across the country virtually every year to visit family and friends in the eastern United States. Rose was known for her positive attitude and wonderful sense of humor. She was also a fountain of information regarding family history, and was always willing to pass it along to grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Rose is survived by her daughter, Kara Wells of Simi Valley, Calif.; two grandsons, Justin and Christopher; two brothers, Henry (Eleanor) Canale of Rochester, Minn., and Larry (Mildred) Canale of LeRoy, N.Y.; and one sister, Mary (Canale) Cich of Lancaster, N.Y. Rose was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva (Mutch) Criscione and Josephine (Mutch) Sack, and one brother, Joseph Canale, who passed away just six months earlier (May 22, 2009). Rose Paternostro was interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, Calif.
