Chautauqua Business Ready For Holidays

December 3, 2009
By Dennis Phillips
CHAUTAUQUA - Next weekend, the holiday season will arrive at the Red Brick Village thanks to Chautauqua Miniatures and 2 Chixx Gift Shoppe.

Sandra Duffee and Heather Johnso own Chautauqua Miniatures and 2 Chixx Gift Shoppe which is located in Red Brick Village, which is along Route 394, 5031 W. Lake Road, Mayville.

The shop has been in the marketplace for five years, switching locations a few times while operating at Red Brick Village.

‘’We’ve moved four times, hopefully this is it,’’ Mrs. Johnson said. ‘’Each time we’ve moved, we’ve moved to a larger space.’’

The long time miniaturists have been open seven years, leaving regular nine-to-five jobs to start new careers.

‘’I’m working with my best friend, being creative. Working with customers on projects to help them tweak things to their specifications,’’ Mrs. Johnson said. ‘’It’s great, being hands on and being creative.’’

With two shops in one, more space is a necessity for the owners to give their customers what they want from unique collectibles in the gift shop to dollhouse accessories in Chautauqua Miniatures.

‘’We have items for all ages, from adult dollhouse collectors to children with a full-line of creative toys that don’t need a computer or batteries,’’ Mrs. Johnson said. ‘’We have stuff for collectors to young children.’’

Chautauqua Miniatures features a full-line of dollhouses from contemporary to Victorian and features several accessories from furniture to people to lights.

The store has several different dollhouse scales from an inch to a half-inch or a quarter-inch. The shop has kits for people who want to build their own dollhouses to several displays so people compare accessories in the store to dollhouses they may have at home.

‘’We also do dollhouse classes on Saturdays during the summer and once a month during the rest of the year,’’ Mrs. Johnson said. ‘’We also have ferry villages for people that want to have a dollhouse outdoors.’’

The two miniaturists have been featured twice in national magazines for their work, once for doing a replica of a condominium at the Chautauqua Institution, and once on their shop.

‘’We were very excited to be featured in a national magazine, especially one we’ve been reading for years,’’ she said.

Mrs. Johnson said the 2 Chixx Gift Shoppe is quickly becoming the place to shop for everything new and unusual for a home. The shop features jewelry, Pashmina scarves, real wax battery candles and gift wrapping.

Along with Mrs. Duffee and Mrs. Johnson, the store also has one other employee, Frank Kier.

The shop is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The shop also has a Web site at and can be reached by calling 753-3100.
