Penn Traffic’s filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy will impact the company’s Quality Markets stores in Westfield and Mayville. As part of the bankruptcy filing, the company is preparing to close several grocery stores in the region. According to Village of Westfield Mayor Dave Carr, he received a letter from the company informing him the Westfield Quality may close around February 15. “It would be a huge impact,” Carr said. Meanwhile, John Crandall, Village of Mayville clerk, said village officials had also received a letter stating the Mayville Quality will close its doors on February 15. “It’s one of those things that it’s certainly a matter of convenience for the community to have a market here,” Crandall said. However, John Rawlinson, Westfield Development Corporation executive director, said the plan to close the Westfield store isn’t a sure bet. “It does not say that it is definite. There may be options,” Rawlinson said. Rawlinson said he has spoken with Benderson Development Company, the company which owns the building the Westfield store is housed in, about what would happen if Quality did close. “I contacted them, and they know about it. At this stage, they have development plans for that site, but they are not ready to tell us what those plans are at the moment,” Rawlinson said. “The response I?got from Benderson Development was encouraging. I want to give the community some encouragement that things could get better.” Carr said the loss of a local grocery store would be detrimental to the area, especially during winter. However, he said he has also spoken with Benderson Development. “They said they’re sure you will be pleased with what we have planned for Westfield,” Carr said. However, Crandall isn’t so sure anything will happen anytime soon with the Mayville Quality building, adding the village hasn’t received any notice or information about potential tenants. “We’d like to see someone come in,” Crandall said.
