Editor’s Note: The following is a letter to Congressman Brian Higgins, D-South Buffalo, from Ripley resident Roger Testrake. It discusses the possible closing of the emergency room at Westfield Memorial Hospital.

Dear Congressman Brian Higgins,

In 2006, I took my wife to Westfield Memorial Hospital for a routine blood pressure check. The Nurse  asked if I wanted to have my b.p. checked. I replied, “Nothing wrong here,  I feel great”. By this time, the Nurse had the cuff on, pumped  up it up, and started the count. “Holy Mother of God” the Nurse exclaimed. “You are going to the ER  right now!”  “You have a runaway pulse of over 155”, as she wheeled me to the ER.

The ER Doctor said, “Send this patient by ambulance to Hamot ER”. I enjoyed a 10 day vacation at Hamot, pestering the nurses and enjoying the good meals.

If that dear Nurse at Westfield Memorial hadn’t checked my blood pressure, I would be  6 feet under. The Hamot Cardiologist said “ The patient would not have survived the ambulance trip to Hamot without the excellent ER care at WMH.”

My Ripley farm would have been deeded to others and a payer of taxes to the Town of Ripley, the County of Chautauqua and the State of New York would have taken his last ride.

The closure of this fine ER will negatively affect all Ripley Residents and may lead to an overcrowding problem at Quincy Rural Cemetery and East Ripley Cemetery, if New York State Health Commissioner Richard Daines doesn’t intercede on behalf of Chautauqua County residents.

Feel the impact of us taxpayers biting the dust!

As my representative, your support for WMH would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Roger Testrake
