RIPLEY - At the Ripley Town Board Meeting held on September 10, 2009 the issue of safety on Ross Street across from the school, was brought to the Board’s attention by Mrs. Marilyn Storll. In Mrs. Storll’s statement she addressed the issues of congestion due to parking on both sides of the street, the inability to see oncoming traffic at the Ross and Main Street intersection, and the lack of school zone and speed limit signs on Ross Street. Ross Street runs from Highway 20/Main Street adjacent to Meeder’s Restaurant, along the east side of Ripley Central School’s gymnasium and elementary wing, past the recreation fields and on to join Route 76, State Street. In fact there are no speed limit signs posted on Ross Street. The issue of cars parked right to the corners on both Ross Street and Main Streets was discussed and Town Supervisor Pete Ryan said they would look into the issue and create no parking zones at both corners. Trudy Babcock, owner of Meeder’s Restaurant, agreed there was a visibility issue and said she would clear out the two parking lots available for Meeder’s to create more off street parking. There are no parking signs on one side of Ross Street, but they are ignored. Town Highway Superintendent Jim Moss stated that plows cannot negotiate the street when cars are parked on both sides of the street, particularly during school events. Mr. Ryan told the group there is an enhanced sheriff presence in Ripley in the evenings, and he will ask to have a presence here to issue warnings and tickets when the no parking zones are established. Concerns about the town building lack of handicap accessibility and location were also brought to the board’s attention, as well as preservation of IOOF building on Main Street next to Ripley Hardware.
