Grates, Sciarrino Exchange Vows

Chautauqua Lake provided the scenic backdrop against which Alexis Anne Grates of Fredonia and Robert J. Sciarrino Jr. of Dunkirk exchanged wedding vows Saturday, June 20, 2009. The ceremony was held at the historic open air Greek-styled and columned Hall of Philosophy at Chautauqua Institution.

The Hon. Paul C. Odell of Westfield officiated at the double ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. Grates of Fredonia; the groom, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Sciarrino Sr. of Battle Creek, Mich., formerly of Westfield.

The bridal attendants wore a tea-length strapless watermelon-hued gowns. The maid of honor was Annie Boehm of Rochester, a college friend and former crew teammate of the bride and the bridesmaids were Caroline Szydlo of Buffalo and Katrina Marutiak of Fredonia, both long-time friends of the bride, and Marissa Sciarrino of Albany, sister of the groom. Felicity Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jordan Cooper of Dunkirk, friends of the bride and groom, was flower girl and wore a miniaturized version of the bridal gown.

Eric Alexander of Rochester served as best man for the groom. The groomsmen were Christian Tiberio of Lakewood, Roger Chagnon III of Westfield, and Jake Hamann of Columbus, Ohio, all friends of the groom. Nathan Hardy, nephew of the bride and son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hardy of Black Creek, was ring bearer.

Readings were presented by Courtney Acostagrates of Portland, Ore.,, sister of the bride; Kaitlyn Grates of Fredonia, sister of the bride; and Joel Biscaro of Dunkirk, friend of the groom.

Music was provided by Kent Knappenberger of Westfield who played harp and piano.

Theme of the wedding was “Dreams Do Come True,” in recognition of the bridal couple being Disney aficionados and their having become engaged at Disney World in Florida in March of 2008. The theme was reflected in music at the marriage ceremony then carried over into the reception, held at Chautauqua Suites in Mayville, where guests were seated at tables saluting famous Disney love stories and couples.

Family and friends attending the event hailed from all over New York as well as from Oregon, Texas, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina and Nevada.

The bride is a 2001 graduate of Fredonia Central School and earned her B.A. degree in mathematics from the University at Buffalo in 2006. She received a master of science in human genetics from Tulane University in New Orleans in 2007. In July she entered her third year of medical studies at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine.

The groom graduated from Westfield Academy and Central School in 1999 and studied communications at SUNY Fredonia. In 1998 he became employed as a telecommunications engineer at Fairpoint Communications in Westfield where he worked until recently. He is currently employed as a network technician at DFT Communications in Fredonia. He is a New York State certified EMT and certified interior firefighter, is a member of and training officer for the East Dunkirk Fire Department. He also works part time as an EMT for Alstar Ambulance and Transportation Services in Dunkirk.

The couple recently returned from a honeymoon in Jamaica and reside in Dunkirk.
