MAYVILLE – If you’re looking for Sadie J’s Café on the Chautauqua Institution grounds, you won’t find it.

Instead, you’ll have to travel up Route 394 to the businesses new location.

Located at 21 South Erie St., Mayville, Sadie J’s Café can be found in the building which formerly housed BonJour Café. Open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the restaurant features breakfast and lunch items, a variety of baked goods and a selection of coffee and teas. The establishment also offers vegetarian and healthy options.

“We don’t do any deep frying; no burgers, no fries, no chicken wings,” said owner Louise Johnson. “There’s nothing over $6 on our menu, so we’re really reasonable priced for the area. I tried to keep the prices low.”

This is also Ms. Johnson’s second go-around owning the business, as she recently took a couple of years off.

“I actually sold it in 2006, so I’ve been out of the restaurant business for three years,” she said. “This came about the beginning of June, so I jumped right back at it.”

While the café was usually packed with people when it was on the Institution’s grounds, Ms. Johnson said she is hoping the same result will happen at her new location and local residents will visit.

“It’s not as busy as we were down there,” she said. “We used to jokingly call that restaurant the never-ending line because there was just a line all day long as opposed to here where it’s just 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – the lunch hour.”

When asked what was the best part about owning her own business, Ms. Johnson said signing the paychecks, having the responsibility and knowing the finished product is on her shoulders, and, of course, being her own boss.

“I have wonderful people working for me,” Ms. Johnson said. “A lot of the same girls that worked for me down at the Institution came with me here.”

Sadie J’s Café is located at 21 South Erie St., Mayville. The café features a variety of breakfast items, including bagels, muffins and breakfast wraps, as well as many different sandwiches and wraps for lunch. There are also vegetarian options, a variety of salads from which to choose and fresh-baked goods such as cookies, Danishes and cinnamon rolls.

The restaurant can be reached by calling 753-3311.
