When Julie Travis moved back to her hometown of Westfield, she quickly fit right back in after purchasing a small restaurant located by the Barcelona pier and lighthouse.
Now, she’s serving homemade pies and daily specials to visitors and regulars who frequent her restaurant.
Located on First Street in Barcelona, Jack’s Barcelona Drive-In features breakfast, lunch and dinner items, along with homemade desserts. The restaurant features an outdoor patio area – complete with umbrellas – and indoor seating for guests. With a wide variety of items to order off the menu, customers can even order food to go, with many fishermen and boaters taking full advantage of the option.
“Business has increased gradually,” Ms. Travis said. “After Sept. 11, 2001 it went down a little. I think most places did, most businesses. Then the last two years have been the best ever it seems to me.”
It’s also not uncommon to find out-of-state license plates on the vehicles parked in the restaurant’s lot, as the business is a short drive off the Westfield exit of Route 90. Visitors and locals can even grab a few brochures highlighting area attractions.
“A lot of people find us by chance, and others are word of mouth,” Ms. Travis said. “The other businesses in the area send people here a lot.”
The restaurant also employs several area high school and college students during the summer months.
When asked what was the best part about owning her own business, Ms. Travis replied that it felt as if she had done something.
“It’s a personal satisfaction or accomplishment,” she said.
Closed in the winter, Jack’s Barcelona Drive-In is open March 1 until Thanksgiving. The restaurant’s business hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Located on First Street in Barcelona, the restaurant can be reached by calling 326-2277.
