BEMUS POINT – Rob Cochran had no idea he would be owning a nursery and garden center.
But, when the opportunity came up to purchase such a business, the Westfield resident couldn’t refuse.
Cochran and his family have owned and operated the Midway Garden Center on Route 430 near Midway State Park for the last three years.
“The lady who owned it for 52 or 54 years prior … she just contacted me through her lawyer who recommended that I take a look at it,” Cochran said.
The business features a variety of gardening items and plants, including annual, perrenials, a limited supply of shrubs, bagged soil and mulch products, grass seed and fertilizer. However, Cochran said he may close the shop down for the season within the next couple of weeks because he has noticed people don’t usually purchase gardening items after the July Fourth holiday.
“You have eight weeks to make money to pay 52 weeks of bills,” Cochran said of the short window for business.
Still, business has been good, Cochran said, even with an economy in crisis.
“At times, when the economic times are bad, that’s when we see it (business) best,” he said.
This upswing in customers may be due to more people staying in the area instead of going on extended vacations, Cochran said.
“Since they are at their homes more, they want their property to look nicer,” he said.
The best part of owning a business, Cochran said, is interacting with customers and hearing compliments about the center’s products and staff.
“The best part is being able to have the latitude to do things you think are right and getting the direct comments back from the customers,” he said.
And, with his mother managing the operation, Cochran the business wouldn’t be where it is now without the help of his family.
“It is family owned and operated. Without the help of the family, we wouldn’t be as successful as we are,” he said. “We’re just really friendly, really nice.”
