June 14, 2009

Gustavus Adolphus Family Services recently named Karl Wiggins as vice president. He is responsible for the operations of the GA Learning Center, the residential facilities for youth and Therapeutic Foster Care. “We’re pleased to have Karl join our team,” said Tom Holt, president and chief executive officer of Lutheran Social Services. “He has the experience and passion we need to continue to provide excellent services for the youth and families we serve.” Wiggins is a native of Westchester County near New York City. He fostered his compassion for youth as a volunteer member of Big Brothers-Big Sisters during his college years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Binghamton University and then completed a masters degree in social work from Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. Most recently he was the vice president of residential services at Brightside for Family and Children in Springfield Massachusetts, which offers similar programming to GA. “This is the work I love,” he said. “We never know when a child will have an ‘AHA’ moment and begin to turn their life around. It could happen today with us or many years from now when they’re ready. I’ll take it any time!” Gustavus Adolphus Family Services is a specialized treatment program for youth and their families who are in need of care. Youth, between the ages of 12 and 17, are placed at Gustavus Adolphus Family Services by family courts, the Department of Social Services, or public school districts.
