NYPD arrests man in ATV hit-run that injured a cop

March 8, 2014
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Police in New York City have arrested a Queens man they say was behind the wheel of an all-terrain vehicle that struck an officer earlier this month, injuring him as he fled the scene.

Police say Friday Kenny Ortiz was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer, assault and eight other crimes in the March 3 incident. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

Police had offered a $12,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. They say the 31-year-old Ortiz was driving an ATV recklessly in East New York, Brooklyn, when officers stopped him. They say that's when Ortiz took off, dragging an officer and running over his legs.

They say the officer suffered a fractured back, broken nose and bruised ribs.
