Cuomo: Charter school talks with lawmakers

March 6, 2014
Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo says that a solution to provide space for charter schools in public school buildings is being discussed with legislative leaders.

Cuomo, a charter school supporter, says Thursday they pose a "technical issue" because of "co-location," the practice of housing them in public school space.

On Wednesday, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's decision not to allow co-location of three charter schools included one elementary school planned for inside a troubled high school. Silver called that inappropriate.

He went on to say that the focus should be on public school students who are sitting in trailers due to overcrowding and construction.

Cuomo says that charter schools are public schools and shouldn't have to pay to operate elsewhere.
