Cops: Western NY Good Samaritans stop drunk driver

February 25, 2014
Associated Press

AVON, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities are crediting several Good Samaritans with stopping a man who was drunk behind the wheel and driving erratically on a western New York highway.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office tells local media outlets that 48-year-old Paul Kostraba of Avon (A'-vahn) side-swiped a tractor-trailer Monday night on Interstate 390 and kept driving. Other motorists blocked his minivan on the off-ramp at the exit in Avon, 20 miles south of Rochester.

Deputies say Kostraba tried to ram his way through the road block and hit two other vehicles. Deputies say Kostraba had his wife and dog in the vehicle at the time.

He was charged driving while intoxicated and numerous traffic offenses. Kostraba is being held Tuesday in the county jail on $1,500 bail. It couldn't be determined if he has a lawyer.
