AMHERST, N.Y. (AP) — Police in western New York say a body has been found in a burned apartment after an early morning fire than caused an estimated $1 million in damage.

The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday at an eight-unit apartment building in the town of Amherst. Police tell local media outlets that a body was found in the apartment where the fire started. Police haven't released information on the victim's identity or cause of the fire.

Amherst Police evacuated most of the residents after receiving 911 calls about the fire, and firefighters used ladders to rescue two upstairs residents and a cat.
