NEW YORK (AP) — Gibney Dance in Lower Manhattan has received a $3 million gift from The Agnes Varis Trust.
It recently announced plans to expand its performing arts center.
The gift will fund renovation and ensure affordable space rentals for nonprofit dance groups and individual artists.
It also will create the Agnes Varis Laboratory for Creative Exploration. That facility will offer technical tools and production resources to developing artists.
The formerly all-female dance troupe is known for its work with domestic abuse survivors and their families.
Varis, who died in 2011, was appointed in 2010 to the President's Committee on Arts and Humanities.
