HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) — Officials at Colgate University in upstate New York picked the lucky 13th of the month for a fundraising blitz that raised more than $5 million.
The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports (http://bit.ly/1dfzs4J ) that Colgate raised the money from 5,683 individual donors on Dec. 13.
The university had never received donations from more than a few hundred people in one day before.
The Dec. 13 fundraiser was promoted on the college radio station as well as social media sites including Twitter and Facebook.
It began in June with a plan for a fundraiser on the last Friday the 13th of the year. Thirteen is Colgate's lucky number.
The school in the village of Hamilton, N.Y. was founded in 1817 by 13 men with "13 dollars, 13 prayers and 13 articles."
