NEW YORK (AP) — A brave dog narrowly escaped a bullet wound when a man broke into one of New York City's public housing buildings.

Mike Noble tells the Daily News ( ) that his pit bull-German shepherd mix named Sheila started barking when a man knocked on the door of his Chelsea apartment and then held up a gun.

The 68-year-old says he braced the door with his arms as the man pushed his way inside. When the dog kept barking, the man fired the gun at her.

The bullet missed the dog by a few inches, but she continued to bark. The pooch was injured by bullet fragments and rushed to a vet by a police officer.

Public housing officials declined to comment on the incident.
