NYC man dies in paraglider crash in upstate river

December 5, 2013

NEW HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — State police say a 47-year-old New York City man has died after he crashed into an upstate river while paragliding.

Troopers say Rupert Cebular of Manhattan and another man were each operating powered paragliders from Randall Airport in Middletown Wednesday afternoon when Cebular tried to practice a touch-and-go maneuver on the frozen surface of the Wallkill River, 60 miles northwest of New York City.

Police say Cebular broke through the ice and crashed. They say Cebular was dead when witnesses and the other paraglider pulled him from the river.

An autopsy is scheduled at the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death.

A paraglider is a form of ultra-light flying machine using a motor mounted on the pilot's back and a paraglider wing similar to a parachute.
