CLARENCE, N.Y. (AP) — A New York truck driver has been sentenced to one year in prison for a head-on crash that killed a couple.
The Erie County District Attorney's office says Steven Reitz of Cato fell asleep at the wheel of his tractor-trailer in October 2012 and veered into oncoming traffic, striking Howard and Barbara Vahue's SUV, some cars and a veterinary clinic. The Vahues, of the Buffalo suburb of Amherst, were killed.
Reitz was sentenced Wednesday in Clarence Town Court, where he pleaded guilty in August to charges of reckless driving, driving while fatigued, falsifying business records and failure to keep right.
Investigators say Reitz had gone without sleep for at least 24 hours.
