KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) — A trial is underway for a Hudson Valley man charged with killing his 2-year-old niece while she was visiting from the Dominican Republic last year.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports ( ) that opening statements were made Wednesday in Ulster County Court in the second-degree murder trial of 44-year-old Joseph Rodriguez of New Paltz.

Prosecutors say he bludgeoned Asia Perez to death in June 2012. Her body was found behind the house where Rodriquez and his wife lived in New Paltz, 75 miles north of New York City.

The girl had arrived at the couple's home for a visit the previous February.

The defense lawyer for Rodriguez told jurors someone else broke into his home, abducted the toddler and killed her.
