WATERLOO, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities in California are still investigating the mysterious death of a woman whose husband collected on a life insurance policy.
The Calaveras County district attorney's office says its investigation of the 1991 death of Christina Karlsen is still active. She died in a fire and her husband, Karl Karlsen, collected $200,000 in insurance on his wife after the fire was declared an accident.
The 53-year-old Karlsen has denied causing her death, but on Wednesday authorities in upstate New York say he admitted causing the death of his son five years ago in a life insurance scheme that netted him $700,000. Karlsen's plea of guilty to second-degree murder came as a surprise a day before his trial was set to open in Seneca County.
More details are to be released Thursday.
