NY rolls into casino business after voter approval

November 6, 2013
Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York is betting casino gambling will turn around the long-distressed upstate economy.

Tuesday's vote to amend the state constitution sets into motion a heated contest to select casino operators.

They will have a hand in selecting sites for the first four of seven Las Vegas-style casinos. One eventually will be in New York City.

With most of the precincts reporting, the referendum passed by about 57 percent to 42 percent, according to unofficial returns.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Gaming Commission will prepare requests for proposals from casino operators, which will submit their proposals.

The result will be choices for operating casino complexes that would include hotels, and specific locations for casinos chosen by developers.

That process will take months and could be delayed further by lawsuits challenging the process.
