DiNapoli says Ameritrade agrees to rights policy

November 1, 2013
Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says Ameritrade Holding Corp., the online brokerage firm, has agreed to amend its employment policy to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

DiNapoli, trustee of New York's $159 billion pension fund for public workers, has proposed similar measures at dozens of companies where the fund invests, reporting agreements with more than 30 since 2010.

According to the comptroller's office, the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index shows 88 percent of Fortune 500 companies have adopted policies barring discrimination based on sexual-orientation while 57 percent include protections for gender identity.

Ameritrade didn't immediately reply to a request for comment Friday.
