NYC mayor hopefuls want Sandy debate date change

October 27, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — New York mayoral candidates Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota are asking the city's Campaign Finance Board to reschedule their debate to Wednesday in order to "properly commemorate" Superstorm Sandy.

The last of three debates between Democrat Bill de Blasio, who's leading in the polls, and Republican Joe Lhota is scheduled for Tuesday, a day which happens to mark the one year anniversary of Sandy.

The candidates released a joint statement on Sunday saying the "day should be marked with solemn reflection and remembrance."

A telephone message seeking comment from the Campaign Finance Board was not immediately returned.

Sandy pummeled the East Coast, killing more than 180 people and causing an estimated $65 billion in damage, making it the second-costliest cyclone in the U.S. behind Hurricane Katrina.
