ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Federal officials are urging New York families to check their medicine cabinets and dispose of unused prescription drugs.
The Drug Enforcement Administration's annual "Take-Back" day is Saturday. State residents can safely get rid of unused prescription drugs, especially pain killers, at collection sites open between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The public can find a nearby collection site by visiting www.dea.gov , clicking on the "Got Drugs?" icon, and following the links to a database where they can enter their zip code.
Statistics show that after marijuana, prescription and over-the-counter medications account for most of the commonly abused drugs by the nation's youth. Over half of those who report nonmedical drug use say the drugs were given to them by a friend or relative.
