SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — A convicted sex offender could face life in prison for attempting to rape a Syracuse woman after using a ladder to reach her bedroom and attacking her while she slept.
The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports (http://bit.ly/1cSdqny ) that 45-year-old Ross Sanford is due in Onondaga County Court Tuesday determine whether he meets the criteria for a persistent violent felony offender, which carries a mandatory maximum sentence of life in prison.
Sanford was convicted last summer of burglary as a sexually motivated offense.
In July 2012, he used a ladder to climb into a 21-year-old woman's apartment while naked. Sanford attempted to rape the woman but she fought him off, ran from the apartment and called 911.
Sanford was designated a Level III sex offender for sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy in 1987.
