CHICESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A New York City couple is doing fine after getting stuck in a muddy sinkhole near their weekend home in the Catskills Mountains.

Neighbors of Jane and Ulf Hofverberg tell the Times Herald-Record of Middletown ( ) that the couple was walking their dog Sunday afternoon when she fell into a sinkhole created by a dredged pond in the Ulster County hamlet of Chicester, 50 miles southwest of Albany.

When her husband tried to help her get out, he also slipped into the mud and got stuck. Jane was able to free herself, but Ulf was stuck up to his waist.

Emergency crews arrived and used a ladder placed across the sinkhole to pull him from the mud shortly after 6 p.m.

The couple wasn't injured.
