NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. (AP) — The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is commemorating the anniversary of a World War I battle that saw soldiers from New York playing a key role in breaching enemy defenses.

Sunday is the 95th anniversary of the American assault on the Germans' Hindenburg Line in France. The Army's 27th Division, made up mostly of New Yorkers, was in the forefront on the first day of the attack, Sept. 29, 1918.

The division's four infantry regiments helped push back the Germans but suffered some of the highest casualties during the offensive. Thirty-nine soldiers from Orange County serving in the 107th Regiment were killed in the initial assault.

The Purple Heart Hall of Honor, located at the New Windsor state historic site in Orange County, is holding a commemoration ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday.
