NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says an investigation reveals that more than 25,000 people with criminal records could have bought illegal guns on just one website.
Bloomberg's group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, conducted a fourth-month investigation of the site Armslist.com.
It says one in 30 people who posted an ad seeking to buy a gun had a criminal record. Convicted felons are banned from buying firearms.
Bloomberg said the investigation only focused on one site. He says it merely "scratched the surface" of the Internet's illegal guns market.
He urged Congress to pass legislation requiring background checks for all gun sales, including those online.
A request for comment from the site was not immediately returned. The site hosts a disclaimer urging users to follow the law.
