NY prosecutor says ex-attorney stole $4 million

September 13, 2013

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A disbarred New York attorney faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing more than $4 million from clients.

Prosecutors say one of the victims was the attorney's wife.

James Kakpakis of Old Westbury pleaded guilty Thursday to grand larceny. He will be sentenced Dec. 3.

Nassau County prosecutors say Kalpakis stole approximately $4.3 million from five clients. He had represented them in real estate deals between September 2008 and January 2011.

They say he also forged his wife's name on documents in 2008 for $1.1 million in a mortgage refinancing scheme.

Prosecutors say his wife knew nothing about the loan.
